Letter to the Profession

Preserving the Dream of America: An Open Letter to the Professionals in Admissions, Financial Aid and Counseling is the result of nearly three years of work by the College Board’s Task Force on Admissions in the 21st Century.

The report is composed of three parts. The first part is a letter from the chair, Jerry Lucido of the University of Southern California, to Gaston Caperton, president of the College Board; Chancellor William E. Kirwan, chair of the Commission on Access, Admissions and Success in Higher Education; and professionals in admissions, financial aid and counseling. This letter serves as the foreword to the full report.

The second part is the task force report itself in the form of an “open letter” to professionals in admissions, financial aid and counseling.

The third part is a data compilation, Selected Data on P-20 Education in America, a fairly comprehensive review of 10 significant indicators of the nation’s educational health.

Notes from the Task Force

As a longtime practitioner in admission and enrollment management I am always impressed by the caliber of professionals who volunteer their time to serve and grapple with difficult situations. The two-year commitment of those who served on the Task Force on Admissions in the 21st century is truly amazing. Each one of them is serious about working to change what has become a very confusing time in admission for families.

I hope their recommendations and observations are taken in the spirit they are given, as guidelines for the future, and that every director of admissions and guidance counselor in the country embraces the need to educate young professionals to the values that underscore our profession.
